Arm Lift Surgery

People are often bothered by excess loose skin on their arms, which can occur with age or after significant weight loss.1 While exercising can help improve muscle tone it may not be enough to correct the appearance of skin that has lost elasticity. If you have concerns with droopy, sagging skin on the underside of your upper arms or simply are unhappy with the size of your upper extremities, an arm lift may be right for you. Arm lift surgery, also called brachioplasty, removes excess skin, fat, and tissue from the elbow to the axilla (armpit) and reshapes the contour of the upper arms.2 The procedure may also be combined with an axilloplasty to address tissue excess that extends into the underarm and along the lateral chest wall.

What is a Thigh Lift?

A thigh lift, or thighplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to enhance the contours of the upper legs and thighs. Especially after a patient has undergone significant weight loss, sagging skin and excess tissue on the thighs can create a bulky appearance that doesn’t reflect the patient’s true fitness. With a thigh lift, Dr. Lickstein is able to remove excess skin and tissue. Liposuction is often employed during a thigh lift to help the patient achieve the contours they desire.1

Reasons for Arm Lift Surgery

Many men and women who desire arm lift surgery typically have lost a significant amount of weight and have concerns about extra skin on the arms that sags, resembling “bat wings”. Others may seek an arm lift procedure to correct arm laxity that has occured due to age or genetics. Common reasons for arm lift surgery include:

  • Desire for shapley and well-defined upper arms
  • Improve the proportion of the upper arm to the forearm
  • Address hygiene issues related to excess folds of upper arm skin
  • Improve physical comfort

What to Expect From Arm Lift Surgery

Preparing for Arm Lift Surgery

Your initial consultation is a great opportunity to get detailed information about arm lift surgery. During this appointment, you’ll be asked about your medical history including any pre-existing medical conditions, and you’ll be given a chance to discuss your goals for the upper arm lift procedure. If you determine that an arm lift is right for you, Dr. Lickstein will tailor a custom treatment plan to achieve your desired result, and provide you with pre-surgical instructions.

How Arm Lift Surgery Works

Brachioplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Lickstein will begin by making an incision along the inside of the upper arm from axilla to the elbow. If you also require fat removal during your arm lift, Dr.  Lickstein may use liposuction in addition to surgical excision. Once he has achieved optimal upper arm contour, your incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures and your arms will be wrapped in a compression garment.

Arm Lift Surgery Recovery

After your arm lift surgery, you’ll be given post-op instructions to follow for an optimal recovery.3 It’s important to plan ahead for a family member or friend to drive you home and stay with you overnight. While it’s common to experience mild pain after the arm lift procedure, Dr. Lickstein will provide you with pain medication to ensure your optimal comfort during the healing process. Your individual recovery time can vary, but for most patients most swelling and discomfort has subsided in approximately one week and they are able to resume your regular routine though there may be some restrictions on strenuous activity.
